The Expedited Specialist Pathway is an AHPRA fast-track route to specialist registration in Australia. It is designed for doctors who hold recognised specialist qualifications from selected countries.

This pathway follows a list approved by the Medical Board of Australia and is separate from the RACGP’s PEP Specialist pathway.

Doctors who qualify under ESP may be eligible for faster assessment and registration as specialists.

Eligible Countries and Qualifications (General Practice)

The following GP qualifications are currently accepted under the Expedited Specialist Pathway:

  • United Kingdom — MRCGP (CCT) post-2007 or equivalent recognised training
  • Ireland — MICGP (CSCST) post-2009
  • New Zealand — FRNZCGP post-2012

These qualifications are listed on the Medical Board’s approved ESP register for specialist registration.
Eligibility is subject to current AHPRA and Medical Board requirements.

The PEP Specialist Pathway is an RACGP program designed for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) who already hold recognised GP specialist qualifications.

It allows eligible doctors to work toward Fellowship of the RACGP through a comparability assessment and supervised practice.

This pathway is suitable for doctors whose training is considered comparable to Australian general practice standards.

Eligible Countries and Qualifications

The following qualifications are currently eligible for PEP Specialist comparability assessment:

  • Australia / Hong Kong / Malaysia — International Conjoint Fellowship of the RACGP (IcFRACGP)

The Fellowship Support Program is an RACGP training pathway for non-vocationally registered doctors who are working toward Fellowship in Australia.

It is open to International Medical Graduates who meet general eligibility and registration requirements.

This pathway is suited to doctors who do not yet hold comparable specialist qualifications but wish to progress toward Fellowship while working in clinical practice.

Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

The FRACGP pathway leads to specialist recognition as a General Practitioner in Australia through Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

This pathway is most commonly undertaken via the Practice Experience Program (PEP) and is designed for non-vocationally recognised doctors who wish to work toward Australian GP Fellowship while practising in approved clinical roles.

The FRACGP pathway is suitable for doctors who:

▪ Do not hold recognised overseas GP specialist qualifications

▪ Are working or intend to work in Australian general practice

▪ Want to progress toward full specialist GP registration in Australia

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

▪ Hold a primary medical degree recognised by the Australian Medical Council (AMC)

▪ Be listed on WDOMS (World Directory of Medical Schools)

▪ Be eligible for Ahpra registration

▪ Meet RACGP entry requirements for the FRACGP pathway (typically via PEP)

Eligibility, supervision level, and training duration are determined by the RACGP following formal assessment.

How the FRACGP Pathway Works?

Doctors accepted into the FRACGP pathway typically:

▪ Enter via the Practice Experience Program (PEP)

▪ Undertake supervised general practice in RACGP-approved training sites

▪ Complete required clinical hours, learning modules, and assessments

▪ Sit and pass the RACGP Fellowship examinations (AKT, KFP, and Clinical Exam)

▪ Apply for Fellowship (FRACGP) upon completion of all requirements

Successful Fellowship grants specialist GP recognition and eligibility for specialist registration with Ahpra.

Key Considerations

▪ Supervision level (Level 1–3) and minimum training time vary by individual

▪ Clinical experience must be completed in RACGP-accredited practices

▪ Documentation, EPIC verification, and correct sequencing are critical to avoid delays

▪ Requirements and fees are subject to RACGP and Ahpra policy updates
